  • Pluto's Moons: A History of Discovery by Astronomers
Pluto's moons were discovered by different astronomers at different times:

    * Charon: Discovered by James W. Christy in 1978.

    * Nix and Hydra: Discovered by the New Horizons team in 2005 using the Hubble Space Telescope.

    * Kerberos: Discovered by the New Horizons team in 2011 using the Hubble Space Telescope.

    * Styx: Discovered by the New Horizons team in 2012 using the Hubble Space Telescope.

So, while the discovery of Pluto's moons is often attributed to the New Horizons team, the initial discovery of Charon was by James W. Christy.
