  • Solar Prominences: What They Are & Where to Find Them
    You're close! Prominences are indeed seen on the Sun, but not *in* the Sun. Here's why:

    * Prominences are large, bright, and often loop-shaped features that extend outward from the Sun's surface. They're made of hot, ionized gas (plasma) that's held in place by the Sun's magnetic field.

    * The Sun's surface is called the photosphere. Prominences are actually found in the Sun's corona, which is the outermost layer of the Sun's atmosphere.

    So, you could say that prominences are seen on the Sun or extending from the Sun, but not in the Sun itself.
