  • What is a New Moon? Understanding Lunar Darkness
When the Moon appears completely dark, it is called a New Moon.

    Here's why:

    * Lunar Phases: The Moon doesn't produce its own light. We see it because sunlight reflects off its surface.

    * New Moon: During a New Moon, the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun. Its sunlit side is facing away from us, making it appear completely dark.
