  • Johannes Kepler and the Elliptical Orbits of Planets: A Key Discovery
The person who discovered that each planet orbits the sun in an ellipse is Johannes Kepler.

Kepler formulated his three laws of planetary motion, which are:

    1. The Law of Ellipses: Planets orbit the Sun in elliptical paths, with the Sun at one focus of the ellipse.

    2. The Law of Areas: A line connecting a planet to the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal times.

    3. The Law of Periods: The square of a planet's orbital period is proportional to the cube of its average distance from the Sun.

Kepler's laws were based on observations made by his mentor, Tycho Brahe, who collected extensive and accurate data about the positions of planets in the sky.
