  • Big Dipper: Asterism vs. Constellation & Related Star Patterns
The Big Dipper isn't a constellation, but rather an asterism. This means it's a recognizable pattern of stars within a larger constellation, in this case, Ursa Major (the Great Bear).

There isn't a smaller version of the Big Dipper, but there are other asterisms within Ursa Major that are visible, such as:

    * The Little Dipper: This asterism is part of Ursa Minor (the Little Bear).

    * The Keystone: The four stars at the center of the Big Dipper form a distinctive shape known as the Keystone.

So, while the Big Dipper is an asterism, it's not a constellation. It's part of the constellation Ursa Major, and there isn't a smaller version of it.
