  • Comet Activity: What Material is Released Near the Sun?
When a comet gets closer to the Sun, it heats up and starts to release material, creating a beautiful and dramatic display. Here's what comes off a comet:

    * Gas and dust: As the ice on the comet's surface warms, it vaporizes, releasing gas (mostly water vapor) and dust particles. This is what creates the comet's coma, a fuzzy, cloud-like atmosphere surrounding the nucleus.

    * Ion tail: Solar radiation ionizes the gas released from the comet, creating a long, straight tail that points away from the Sun. This is the ion tail.

    * Dust tail: The dust released from the comet is pushed away from the Sun by solar wind pressure. This creates the dust tail, which is broader and often curved, reflecting sunlight.

In short, the closer a comet gets to the Sun, the more material it releases, creating the iconic coma and tails that make comets so fascinating to observe.
