  • Evangelista Torricelli's Mercury Barometer: Discoveries & Atmospheric Pressure
Evangelista Torricelli invented the first mercury barometer in 1643 and stated that the pressure of the atmosphere is equal to the weight of a column of mercury 760 millimeters high.

This was a groundbreaking discovery because it:

    * Proved that air has weight. Before this, it was thought that air was weightless.

    * Demonstrated that air pressure exists and varies. This led to the development of weather forecasting and other applications.

    * Challenged the prevailing theory of the vacuum. Prior to Torricelli, many believed that a vacuum could not exist. His invention helped to establish the existence of a vacuum.

This discovery revolutionized our understanding of the atmosphere and paved the way for many advancements in science and technology.
