  • Understanding Lunar Phases: Is the Moon's Illuminated Surface Changing?
That's not quite right! The amount of the Moon's sunlit surface you see from Earth changes over time, but it's not necessarily getting larger overall. Here's why:

    * Lunar Phases: The Moon's appearance changes because of the way sunlight hits it as it orbits the Earth. We see different amounts of the illuminated side, which we call the lunar phases.

    * Waxing and Waning: The sunlit fraction of the Moon increases during the waxing phases (New Moon to Full Moon) and decreases during the waning phases (Full Moon to New Moon).

    * Cycle: This cycle repeats roughly every 29.5 days.

So, the sunlit fraction of the Moon is constantly changing, not increasing permanently.
