  • Shooting Stars: What Are They Really?
A shooting star is not a planet. It's actually a meteor.

    Here's the breakdown:

    * Planets are large celestial bodies that orbit a star. They are much larger than meteors.

    * Meteors are small pieces of debris, usually from comets or asteroids, that enter Earth's atmosphere. The friction from the air causes them to burn up, creating a bright streak of light we call a shooting star.

So, while we call them "shooting stars," they are not stars at all!
