  • Understanding Moonlight: Why Does the Moon Shine?
The moon doesn't actually produce its own light. It reflects sunlight, which is why it appears luminous to us.

    Here's a breakdown:

    * The Sun: The Sun is a massive star that emits its own light and heat.

    * Sunlight: The Sun's light travels through space and reaches the Moon.

    * Reflection: The Moon's surface, covered in dust and rock, reflects a portion of the sunlight back towards Earth.

    * Luminous Appearance: The reflected sunlight is what we see as the moon's "light".

This is why the moon appears to change shape (phases). As the Moon orbits Earth, the angle at which sunlight hits its surface changes, leading to different amounts of reflected light reaching our eyes.
