  • Star Composition: Hydrogen and Helium - The Building Blocks of Stars
The two main gases that stars are made of are hydrogen (H) and helium (He).

    * Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and makes up about 75% of the mass of a star.

    * Helium is the second most abundant element and makes up about 24% of the mass of a star.

While these two elements are the most prevalent, stars also contain trace amounts of other heavier elements.
