While Sirius appears to be the brightest star in our night sky, it is actually much fainter than our sun.
Here's why:
* Distance: Sirius is about 8.6 light-years away from Earth, while the sun is only 8.3 light-minutes away. This means Sirius's light has to travel much farther to reach us, making it appear dimmer.
* Intrinsic Brightness: The sun is a much larger and hotter star than Sirius. While Sirius is about twice as massive as the sun, it is also much less luminous (less intrinsically bright).
In fact, the sun is about 25 times brighter than Sirius. However, Sirius's proximity to Earth makes it appear brighter in our night sky.
