  • Star Magnitude: Understanding Apparent & Absolute Brightness
The brightness of a star measurable on a scale is called magnitude.

There are two types of magnitudes:

    * Apparent magnitude: This is how bright a star appears from Earth. It is measured on a scale where lower numbers indicate brighter stars. For example, Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, has an apparent magnitude of -1.46.

    * Absolute magnitude: This is the brightness of a star if it were located at a standard distance of 10 parsecs (32.6 light-years) from Earth. It is a measure of the star's intrinsic luminosity.
