It was discovered in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi and was initially classified as a planet. However, as more objects were found in the asteroid belt, Ceres was reclassified as an asteroid.

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) redefined the term "planet" and established a new category: "dwarf planet". Ceres was then reclassified as a dwarf planet.
