  • Understanding Stellar Motion in the Northern Hemisphere
Stars near the North Celestial Pole appear to move in circles around the pole.

    Here's why:

    * Earth's Rotation: The Earth rotates on its axis, completing one rotation roughly every 24 hours.

    * North Star: The North Star (Polaris) is very close to the North Celestial Pole, which is the point in the sky directly above the Earth's North Pole.

    * Circular Motion: As the Earth rotates, stars appear to move in circles around the North Star. Stars closer to the North Star make smaller circles, while stars farther away make larger circles.

The direction of this apparent motion is counter-clockwise when viewed from the Northern Hemisphere.
