  • The Sun's Fate: Will It End in a Supernova? (And What Happens Next)
No, our Sun will not become a supernova.

    Here's why:

    * Supernovas happen to massive stars. Our Sun is a relatively small star, classified as a yellow dwarf. Supernovas occur when stars at least 8 times the mass of our Sun run out of fuel and collapse under their own gravity.

    * Our Sun will become a red giant. When our Sun exhausts its hydrogen fuel, it will expand into a red giant, engulfing Mercury, Venus, and possibly Earth. Eventually, it will shed its outer layers and become a white dwarf, a small, dense, and very hot stellar remnant.

So, while our Sun will eventually die, it will not go out with a bang like a supernova.
