  • Ptolemy's View of the Sun: A Geocentric Perspective
Ptolemy, the famous Greek astronomer, was a proponent of the geocentric model of the universe, which placed the Earth at the center. This is how he viewed the Sun:

    * The Sun is a celestial body that orbits the Earth. He believed the Sun, along with other planets, moved in circular orbits around a stationary Earth.

    * The Sun is not a source of light. In his model, the Sun reflected the light of a more distant "prime mover" (essentially a source of light for the universe).

    * The Sun's distance from Earth varies. Ptolemy's model explained the apparent change in the Sun's size over the year by suggesting the Earth was not perfectly centered within the Sun's orbit.

It's important to remember that Ptolemy's geocentric model, though influential for over 1400 years, was ultimately proven incorrect. We now know that the Earth revolves around the Sun, and the Sun itself is a star that generates its own light.
