    The concept of an astronomer continuously peering through a telescope is not valid today for several reasons:

    * Modern telescopes are automated and remote: Today's telescopes are often massive and located in remote locations with ideal viewing conditions. They are operated remotely using computers, eliminating the need for an astronomer to physically be present at the telescope.

    * Data collection and analysis: Modern astronomy relies heavily on digital data. Telescopes collect data digitally, which is then analyzed using powerful computers and sophisticated software. This allows astronomers to study vast amounts of data, far more than they could ever observe through a telescope.

    * Focus on specific tasks: Astronomers today specialize in specific areas of research. Their work often involves analyzing existing data, developing theoretical models, or using computer simulations. They may only use a telescope occasionally to gather specific data for a project.

    * Efficiency and cost: Continuously peering through a telescope would be inefficient and impractical. It would be physically demanding, and the observer wouldn't be able to capture all the data that a modern telescope can. It would also be expensive to maintain a staff of astronomers dedicated to constant observation.

    However, there are still cases where visual observation is important:

    * Visual confirmation: Astronomers may use visual observation through telescopes to confirm the presence of certain objects or phenomena, especially when the data from digital detectors is unclear.

    * Public outreach: While most research telescopes are automated, some observatories offer public viewing sessions, where visitors can look through telescopes and experience the beauty of the night sky.

    In summary, modern astronomy has moved beyond the era of continuous visual observation. The focus is now on digital data collection, analysis, and computer modeling, which offer far greater capabilities for understanding the universe.
