  • Journey to Mars: Why Jets Can't Reach the Red Planet
It's impossible to get to Mars in a jet. Here's why:

    * Jets are designed for Earth's atmosphere: Jets rely on air to generate lift and thrust. There's practically no atmosphere in space.

    * Vast distance: The distance between Earth and Mars varies, but it's always millions of miles. Even at the closest point, it would take a spacecraft traveling at jet speeds (around 500-600 mph) thousands of years to reach Mars.

How we actually get to Mars:

    * Spacecraft and rockets: We use powerful rockets to launch spacecraft out of Earth's atmosphere.

    * Long journey: Spacecraft travel at much higher speeds than jets, but the trip to Mars still takes months.
