  • Understanding Ocean Tides: The Moon's Dominant Role
The Moon is the primary cause of tides in the ocean.

While the Sun also has a gravitational pull on the Earth, its influence on tides is much weaker than the Moon's because it's much farther away.

Here's why the Moon has a stronger effect:

    * Gravitational pull is inversely proportional to the square of the distance. This means that the closer an object is, the stronger its gravitational pull.

    * The Moon is much closer to Earth than the Sun.

Even though the Sun is much larger than the Moon, the Moon's proximity makes its gravitational pull on Earth's oceans stronger.
