Laika: The First Living Creature in Space - History & Significance
The first being in space was Laika, a Soviet dog, who was launched on November 3, 1957, aboard the Soviet satellite Sputnik 2.
While there were earlier unmanned missions, Laika was the first living creature to orbit Earth. Sadly, Laika died in space a few hours after launch due to overheating, but her mission was a crucial step in the early days of space exploration.
