  • Big Dipper & Polaris: Understanding the Pointer Stars
The imaginary line drawn from the two stars at the front of the Big Dipper (Dubhe and Merak) leads to Polaris, the North Star.

This line is often called the "pointer stars" because they point towards Polaris.

Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, is located in a different part of the sky.
