    The shape of a planet's orbit is most like an ellipse.

    While often depicted as perfect circles, planetary orbits are actually slightly oval-shaped. An ellipse has two focal points, and the Sun sits at one of these focal points. This means the planet is sometimes closer to the Sun and sometimes farther away.
