The planet was discovered in 1846, and the astronomers who discovered it, Urbain Le Verrier and John Couch Adams, chose the name because of the planet's blue color and its location in the outer solar system. Neptune is the farthest planet from the sun, and its atmosphere is made up mostly of hydrogen and helium, giving it a deep blue appearance.
