Imagine being in a forest. You can see the trees around you, but it's impossible to see the whole forest's layout from within it. The same goes for the Milky Way. We can see the band of stars that makes up the galactic disk, and we know about the spiral arms, but we can't see the overall shape from our vantage point within the disk.
However, astronomers have pieced together the shape of the Milky Way through various methods, including:
* Mapping the distribution of stars and gas: We can observe the types and distribution of stars and gas clouds across the sky, which gives us clues about the spiral structure.
* Observing other galaxies: By studying other spiral galaxies, we can gain insights into the general structure and characteristics of spiral galaxies, which helps us understand our own.
* Radio and infrared observations: These observations penetrate dust clouds that obscure visible light, allowing us to map the distribution of stars, gas, and dust across the galaxy.
While we can't directly see the spiral shape, we have a pretty good understanding of it thanks to these efforts!
