He was the first person to predict the existence of the planet based on its gravitational effects on Uranus. He then worked with Johann Galle, a German astronomer, to locate Neptune in the sky. While Galle is credited with the actual discovery of Neptune, Le Verrier was so confident in his prediction that he suggested the name "Neptune" to honour the Roman god of the sea.
