The rings around Saturn were first observed by Galileo Galilei in 1610. However, he initially mistook them for "ears" or "handles" on the planet due to the limitations of his telescope.

It wasn't until 1655 that Christiaan Huygens correctly identified them as a flat ring surrounding Saturn with his more powerful telescope.
