  • Understanding the Calvin Cycle: When Does It Start?
The light-independent Calvin-Benson cycle of photosynthesis begins after the light-dependent reactions have taken place.

    Here's why:

    * Light-dependent reactions capture light energy and use it to create ATP (energy currency) and NADPH (a reducing agent).

    * Light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle) use the ATP and NADPH produced in the light-dependent reactions to convert carbon dioxide into sugar.

Therefore, the Calvin cycle cannot begin until the light-dependent reactions have provided the necessary energy carriers (ATP and NADPH).
