  • The Outer Planets: Understanding the Solar System's Distant Worlds
That's a good way to think about it! It's technically more accurate to say the outer planets are the four farthest from the Sun.

    Here's why:

    * Traditional Definition: Traditionally, the outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They are considered "gas giants" because they are primarily composed of gas, unlike the rocky inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars).

    * Dwarf Planets: While Pluto is farther out than Neptune, it is classified as a dwarf planet, not a traditional planet.

So, while the outer planets are definitely the five farthest objects from the Sun, only four are considered "true" planets.
