The smoke detector was not originally used on a space mission. It was invented much earlier, with the first patent for a smoke detector granted in 1902 to Walter Jaeger.

While smoke detectors are used in space, their development predates space travel. The earliest versions of these detectors were very different from the ones we use today and primarily focused on industrial applications.
