  • Barometers: How They Measure Atmospheric Pressure - A Comprehensive Guide
The modern meteorological instrument that measures atmospheric pressure is called a barometer.

There are two main types of barometers used in meteorology:

    * Mercury barometer: This is the classic type of barometer, consisting of a glass tube filled with mercury and inverted into a reservoir of mercury. The height of the mercury column in the tube is directly proportional to the atmospheric pressure.

    * Aneroid barometer: This type of barometer uses a sealed, partially evacuated metal chamber that expands and contracts in response to changes in atmospheric pressure. This movement is mechanically translated into a reading on a dial.

Both types of barometers provide accurate measurements of atmospheric pressure, which is an important factor in understanding and predicting weather patterns.
