  • Understanding Cloud Albedo: Why Clouds Reflect Sunlight
Clouds reflect a lot of sunlight because they have a high albedo.

Albedo refers to the reflectivity of a surface. Clouds are made up of tiny water droplets or ice crystals, which are very good at reflecting sunlight back into space. This is why we see clouds as bright white against the blue sky.

Here's why clouds have a high albedo:

    * Scattering: The water droplets and ice crystals in clouds are much smaller than the wavelength of visible light. This means they scatter sunlight in all directions, rather than absorbing it. This scattering effect is what makes clouds appear white.

    * Surface Area: Clouds have a large surface area, further increasing the amount of sunlight they can reflect.

The high albedo of clouds plays a crucial role in regulating Earth's temperature. They reflect a significant portion of incoming solar radiation, helping to keep the planet cool.
