    Quasars are thought to be the centers of distant galaxies.

    Specifically, they are believed to be powered by supermassive black holes at the heart of these galaxies. As material falls into these black holes, it gets heated to incredibly high temperatures and releases vast amounts of energy, making the quasars appear incredibly bright and powerful.
