In Greek mythology, the Titans were a race of powerful deities who ruled the world before the Olympians.

The name was chosen by John Herschel, the son of astronomer William Herschel who discovered Titan in 1789. He decided to name Saturn's moons after the Titans from Greek mythology, just as he had named Jupiter's moons after the Roman gods.
