By diameter:
* > 1 km: There are estimated to be around 1.1 million asteroids larger than 1 kilometer in diameter.
* > 10 km: There are estimated to be around 900 asteroids larger than 10 kilometers in diameter.
By mass:
* > 1% of the Moon's mass: Only Ceres meets this criteria, being the largest object in the asteroid belt.
* > 0.1% of the Moon's mass: A handful of asteroids, including Vesta and Pallas, fall into this category.
Important notes:
* Estimates: These numbers are estimates based on observations and modeling. There are likely many more asteroids, especially smaller ones, that we haven't yet detected.
* Asteroid belt: The vast majority of these asteroids reside in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
* Not all large asteroids are in the belt: Some large asteroids exist in other parts of the solar system, including near-Earth asteroids (NEAs).
It's worth remembering that even relatively small asteroids can pose a threat if they impact Earth. Space agencies are actively monitoring and studying these objects to better understand their potential risk.
