  • Earthquake Intensity: Understanding Distance from the Epicenter
The intensity of an earthquake is higher near the epicenter and decreases as you move away from it.

    Here's why:

    * Epicenter: The point on the Earth's surface directly above the focus (where the earthquake originates) is the epicenter. This is the point where the seismic waves first hit the surface.

    * Seismic Waves: Earthquakes release energy in the form of seismic waves that travel through the Earth. These waves cause the ground to shake.

    * Energy Dissipation: As seismic waves travel away from the epicenter, they spread out and their energy is distributed over a larger area. This means the intensity of the shaking decreases with distance.

Therefore, the closer you are to the epicenter, the more intense the shaking will be.
