It was discovered in 1930 and was initially classified as a planet, but that status was challenged in the late 20th century.
In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) redefined the definition of a planet, and Pluto didn't meet the new criteria.
It was reclassified as a dwarf planet.
