The name of the American spaceships used in trips to the Moon were the Apollo command and service modules (CSM) and the Apollo Lunar Modules (LM). The CSM consisted of a Command Module (CM), which carried the astronauts, and a Service Module (SM), which provided power, propulsion, and life support for the CM. The LM consisted of two stages: the Descent Stage, which landed on the Moon, and the Ascent Stage, which took the astronauts back to the CSM.
