  • The 8 Planets of Our Solar System: Definition & Why Pluto Isn't One
There are currently eight true planets in our solar system. They are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

A true planet must meet three criteria:

    1) It must orbit the Sun.

    2) It must have enough mass to be round.

    3) It must have cleared its orbit of other debris.

Pluto, once considered to be the ninth planet from the Sun, does not meet the third criterion. Its orbit is intersected by the Kuiper Belt, a region of icy bodies that extend beyond Neptune. This means that Pluto has not cleared its orbit of other debris and is therefore considered to be a dwarf planet.
