  • Greek Mythology: The Origin of the Seasons - Helios & Demeter
According to Greek mythology, the different seasons are caused by the chariot of the sun god Helios. Helios rode his golden chariot across the sky each day, pulled by four horses. In the summer, Helios rode high in the sky, bringing long days and warm weather. In the winter, Helios rode low in the sky, bringing shorter days and cold weather.

The changing seasons were also associated with the myth of Demeter and Persephone. Demeter was the goddess of the harvest, and Persephone was her daughter. Each year, Persephone would spend six months with her mother on Earth and six months with Hades, the god of the underworld. When Persephone was with her mother, the Earth was in bloom and bountiful. When she was with Hades, the Earth was cold and barren.

The story of Demeter and Persephone explains why plants die in the winter and come back to life in the spring. It also explains why people feel sad and depressed in the winter and happy and energized in the spring.
