The European flag does not have 12 stars, but 12 gold stars arranged in a circle on a blue background. Twelve is the traditional number of stars used to symbolise the unity and completeness of the European Union, and represents the unity, solidarity and harmony among the member states of the European Union. The number of stars does not change even as new members join the union.
