Jupiter is named after the Roman king of the gods, Iuppiter. The English name Jupiter comes from the Latin Diespiter, meaning roughly 'Sky-Father'. Iuppiter is thought to have been derived from the Proto-Indo-European word *dyeu-pater, also meaning 'Sky-Father'. The root *dyeu- is the source of the words deus (Latin), theos (Greek), and deva (Sanskrit).
