NASA's recent attempt to find water on the moon occurred in 2022 with their Artemis I mission. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter detected hydrogen-rich material in the southern regions of the moon. Further water detection was done through the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) in 2009.
