  • International Space Station Orbit: Which Atmospheric Layer?
The International Space Station (ISS) orbits Earth in the thermosphere, which is part of the Earth's upper atmosphere. The thermosphere extends from about 90 to 600 kilometers (56 to 373 miles) above Earth's surface. The thermosphere is characterized by very high temperatures, low density, and the presence of the aurora borealis and aurora australis.
