Because of its proximity to the Sun, Mercury can experience extremely high temperatures during the day, with surface temperatures reaching up to 450 degrees Celsius (840 degrees Fahrenheit). However, at night, temperatures can drop to -180 degrees Celsius (-290 degrees Fahrenheit) due to the lack of an atmosphere to retain heat.
