The cloud that is like a sheet or layer that covers most of the sky is called a stratus cloud. Stratus clouds are low-level clouds that appear as a uniform gray layer in the sky. They often cover the entire sky and can be thick enough to block out the sun or moon. Stratus clouds are common in the winter months, but can also occur in the summer.
