The frequency of sunspot occurrences varies over an approximately 11-year cycle, known as the solar cycle. During the solar maximum phase, sunspot activity is at its peak, and hundreds to thousands of sunspots can be observed on the sun's surface. During the solar minimum phase, sunspot activity is much reduced, and only a few sunspots or none may be visible.
