  • The Origins of Star Names: Greek, Latin, and Arabic Influences
The majority of bright stars do not have Arabic names, but rather names derived from Greek, Latin, or Arabic sources.

    * Greek: Many bright stars have names that come from Greek mythology or ancient Greek astronomers, such as Sirius (from the Greek word for "scorching"), Vega (from the Arabic word for "falling eagle"), and Orion (named after the Greek hunter).

    * Latin: Some bright stars have names that come from Latin, such as Altair (from the Latin word for "eagle"), Spica (from the Latin word for "ear of corn"), and Regulus (from the Latin word for "little king").

    * Arabic: A minority of bright stars have names that come from Arabic, such as Aldebaran (from the Arabic word for "forehead of the Pleiades"), Betelgeuse (from the Arabic word for "armpit of the giant"), and Rigel (from the Arabic word for "foot").
