The thermosphere extends from 80 km above Earth's surface outward into space. It is the hottest layer of the atmosphere, with temperatures reaching up to 2,000 °C. This layer is very thin, and it contains very little air. The molecules in the thermosphere are constantly moving and colliding with each other, which creates friction and heat. This heat causes the thermosphere to be very hot.
