  • Type II Supernova: The Minimum Mass Required
For a star to undergo a Type II supernova, it must have a mass that is at least eight times the mass of the Sun ($m\sim8 m_\odot$). Type II supernovae occur when the progenitor star is massive enough to fuse all of its elements up to iron, but when it can no longer support itself against its own gravitational forces due to the lack of fusion processes that provide outward pressure.
